How To
How to Install a Sprinkler System
By following the proper procedure, you can install a sprinkler system without difficulty. For sidewalk and curb sprinklers, make an allowance of 1″ to 6″ from the sprinkler to ensure smooth operation of the edger and other tools during the installation process. Position the riser in such a way that the sprinkler stays in place. Otherwise, you may add a 4″ to 6″ pipe to the bottom inlet of the sprinkler while attaching the riser to the pipe joint for a more stable system. The use of shrub sprinklers with pipes above the ground is discouraged.
Installing sprinklers on seeded lawns
When purchasing a sprinkler system, it is advisable to get a short “riser extension” that connects to the pop-up riser. This elevates the nozzle a few inches higher so that the seeds are not washed away by the water. However, it’s important that you dismantle the extensions before the initial mowing. Another alternative to prevent seed erosion by water is to set the sprinkler heads so that the top of the sprinkler is two inches above the ground.
Positioning the emitter
Do not position the emitter directly at the plant stem, especially for the newly planted ones. Direct the first emitter at the root-ball farthest from the stem. For adult plants, maintain a distance of at least one foot between the emitter and the stem/trunk. Place the next emitter at least two feet away from the first one to maximize water dispersal. This is because an emitter can cover an area with a 36″ diameter. However, for lawns, emitters should be set at 1-foot intervals with the emitter tubes in rows 18″ apart.
