Information About Installing and Fitting a Sprinkler Valve

A sprinkler valve is a component of the sprinkler system that regulates water flow to the sprinkler. At the same, the sprinkler valve prevents dirty or soiled water from being suctioned back into the fresh water supply after the sprinklers have been turned off. For this, an electric anti-siphon valve is recommended. It is compatible with any sprinkler control timer upon proper installation of the Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker (AVB).

Here are tips on how to install a sprinkler valve:

1. Install the sprinkler valve at least 6" above the highest sprinkler or according to the local codes. 2. Only the drain valves should come between the sprinkler valve and the sprinklers. 3. The outlet of the sprinkler valve should never be back-pressured. 4. If possible, place the sprinkler valve in a vertical and level position in an outdoor area just within reach. 5. Do not let the sprinkler valve to run uninterrupted for more than 12 hours. 6. Always consult the local codes for laws or regulations on underground sprinkler installation.

Requirements for sprinkler valve fitting:

1. If static water pressure is greater than 80 PSI, install a pressure regulator upstream of the valve. 2. Install a manual shut-off valve between the water source and sprinkler valve to allow draining during the winter season without interfering with the main water supply. 3. Use Teflon tapes in threaded valve connections. 4. Before installing the valves, flush the water supply line completely to wash away sand and dirt in the water line which may hamper proper operation. 5. Allow a minimum clearance of 4" between valves for easy maneuvering when tightening or removing them. 6. Apply water pressure to the valves after securing the pipe with cement to be able to check if there are any leaks in the pipe fittings. 7. Manually test valve operation by making a slow half turn to the solenoid in a counterclockwise direction. Within five minutes, it should have opened. To close the valve, turn the solenoid clockwise until it stops. 8. To increase flow rate, turn the flow control counterclockwise. 9. In choosing a cable, allow one wire for each valve and another one as a return. 10. Thinking ahead, it is wise to have a cable with extra wires in order to accommodate additional valves for future sprinkler system expansion.
