How to Repair Sprinklers

Here are some of the more familiar problems encountered with sprinklers and how they can be remedied:

1. The automatic timer of a sprinkler runs on electricity. If the clock suddenly stops for no apparent reason, instinct should tell you to check if the plug is properly switched or is getting electric power. If the problem still persists, it might be from an internal source that may require professional assistance.

2. A sprinkler is made up of several interconnected pipes that are either installed above the ground or below. During winter, there is the tendency for these pipes to retain water that eventually freezes and cause them to burst. Most sprinkler models now have provisions for draining water and a shut-off switch that activates during the cold season. The operating manual provides a procedure for reactivating the sprinkler when the winter season is over. At times, you might encounter a malfunctioning sprinkler head while the others are normally discharging water. This might be a clog problem. In a pop-up sprinkling head, sand or dirt may be preventing the head from popping and activating - thus, no water comes out. The culprit may also be an underground leak, so it is wise to inspect the tube that feeds the sprinkler with water.

3. A zone is the area covered by a sprinkler. If the sprinkler is not working, it may be that the automatic timer has not been programmed for activation or it may also be the delivery box that propels the water to the different zones. In either way, the services of a professional may be sought to solve the problem.

4. Water running continuously under an automatic timer signals a serious problem. How to shut off the water can be found in the operating manual, but solving the problem is best left in the hands of professionals.

5. Sprinkler heads are usually interchangeable, and one problem with this is the accidental knocking off during replacement. The manual can be referred to for proper head adjustment. When the weather gets colder, the system undergoes a winterizing process to prevent freezing and possible bursting of the pipes. Here, water is drained or blown out of the passages. Then the timer is shut off for the rest of the winter season to avoid inadvertent activation.
