How to Install a Sprinkler

A sprinkler is a convenient and efficient solution to your watering requirements. Here are the steps on how to install a sprinkler system:

1. Built a manifold, which is a row of control valves with 3" to 6" intervals and is connected to a PVC pipe. You can place the manifold above the ground or underground but with the control valves sticking out.

2. Dig up eight-inch-deep trenches that are straight and level for the pipe. For sidewalk excavation, connect a piece of galvanized PVC pipe to the garden hose. Turn the water to full force to wash the soil away. Cap the pipe with duct tape before forcing through the hole.

3. Install a T- or Y-connector pipe to tap into the main water supply line. This could be in the basement after the water meter, behind an outside hose bib or along the main supply line just past the outside meter before entering the house. Likewise, put a valve into place for emergency shut-off and for draining purposes during the winter. An ideal location for the valve would be after the connection to the water supply line and to the manifold. Water is then turned on to flush the sprinkler system.

4. To keep contaminated water from going back to the supply lines, place anti-siphon valves onto the control valves.

5. Lay out the pipe and its connections on the trenches, temporarily screwing the threaded riser tee to a 90-degree angle to the ground.

6. Install and cut the risers so that the sprinklers meet the required height. The sprinkler heads are then attached.

7. Mount the automatic controller using low-voltage wires to the valves. Also program the watering circuit controls. To test the system, turn each circuit on and off for a few times.
